SICKLE CELL DISEASE (SCD)
Sickle cell disease is an inherited genetic disorder and affects 0.4% of Indian population. But taking into consideration 17% of Worlds population, more than half of the World's SCD affected population are in India, Indian SCD patients are considered milder than that of African origin counterpart due to increased fetal hemoglobin, co-inheritance of alpha thalassemia, environmental conditions, diet pattern etc. Studies in Indian SCD patients is need of a hour to explore SCD. Worst affected states in India are Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa. Although prevalence is also studies from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Keral and Karnataka. It can be referred as 5-4-3 state model of SCD in India based on intensity of prevalence.
